The research has revealed that coolant pumps account for 30% of the electric power consumption in a production facility. By reducing the energy consumed by coolant pumps it will substantially contribute to the reduction of
electricity in the whole factory.

Automated system for the earth worms at Siloso beach resort & system

Two final-year students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic have developed an automated system prototype to help Siloso Beach Resort in Sentosa automate their caretaking process for its wormery, which has close to one million earthworms. The earthworms produce organic fertiliser for the eco-hotel’s plants and vegetables and for them to thrive; their bedding habitat needs to be constantly monitored to ensure the appropriate level of alkalinity and moisture.

SMC electric actuator series LEYG and LEMB are used in the prototype project o transfer the probes to measure the pH level and moisture content of the bedding in each tray. Apart from being user-friendly and hassle-free, this innovative solution also increases productivity as it frees the staff to perform other tasks. In addition, it reduces the human error inherent in manual testing.
